We often hear the word antioxidant in magazines, in the news, and even on the labels of ketchup bottles! What are exactly are antioxidants and can they effectively prevent or slow down cancer?</p>
<p>In order to understand antioxidants and cancer prevention, we must know what exactly antioxidants are and how they help our bodies.</p>
<p>Antioxidants are substances that prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that have lost an electron, thus are unstable. These free radicals basically steal electrons from<br />
other molecules in effort to heal themselves, ultimately creating new free radicals in the process. By stealing electrons, it can cause damage to DNA, leading to the possible development of cancer.</p>
<p>Antioxidants search for these free radicals and lend them an electron. This stabilizes the molecule, thus preventing damage to other cells. Antioxidants also turn free radicals into waste by products, and they eventually get eliminated from the body. They also have the ability to repair previous damage to cells.</p>
<p>What Factors Cause Free Radicals To Form</p>
<p>Free radicals are formed from a number of causes. Cigarette smoke, pollution, exposure to sunlight all cause the formation of free radicals. Other factors include normal daily processes like food digestion and breathing.</p>
<p>Where Can I Find Antioxidants?</p>
<p>Antioxidants are found naturally in fruits and vegetables. They also are contained in some meats. Some examples of fruits and veggies that are rich in antioxidants are:</p>
<p>    * Yellow and orange vegetables- Think sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, papaya, guava, and cantaloupe<br />
    * Green and leafy veggies, like turnip greens, spinach and kale<br />
    * Other great fruits include strawberries, kiwi, cranberries, and plums<br />
    * Great veggies for antioxidants are broccoli, red and green peppers, bok choi, and tomatoes</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Doctors say that we need to be ingesting at least 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies every day.  I don&#8217;t know about you but I remember having a hard time getting all of them in each day. I knew that with all of the advancements in health and science there had to be an easier way. It was about three years ago when I started my quest. Last year I finally found what I was looking for. I have to say, I took their 12 week challenge and I have never felt better. I use to have trouble sleeping also I had neck and back injuries from football back in high school. About a week into the challenge my pain was gone! Also, I have had a great night sleep, every night since. I just wanted to share this with all of you. I know that I am not the only one out there with health issues. If I were you, I would do what I did and take the 12 week challenge. The worst that can happen is you feel better.</p>

<p>Besides the brain, the cardio system is perhaps the most susceptible to the damage caused by oxidative stress. ViaViente contains Anti-Oxidants that reduce inflammation and promote a healthy circulatory system. It does this by reducing platelet aggregation, strengthening vascular membranes, and safeguarding against cellular destruction.</p>

<p>Flavonoids in the botanicals reduce the risk of atherosclerosis – or hardening of the arteries – which is the plaque buildup in arteries that can lead to heart attack or stroke. These Anti-Oxidants protect against the damage caused by LDL (”bad”) cholesterol, help maintain healthy cholesterol levels and reduce the risk factors from heart disease that lead to death.</p>
<p>Women have unique cardiovascular risk factors, especially menopausal and post-menopausal women. The fruits and roots in ViaViente take these special nutritional needs into account. Prune anthocyanins promote healthy cholesterol levels, particularly HDL (good) cholesterol.</p>
<p>The lack of estrogen often triggers an increase in blood cholesterol and lipid levels. Prune nectar which is rich in dietary fiber and Anti-Oxidants has been shown to be very effective in maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system, especially for those who choose not to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT).</p>
<p>Inflammation is moving to the forefront as a risk factor in heart disease. It is especially damaging to collagen and connective tissues because, over time, tissues begin to scar and become less elastic. Blood vessels in these tissues become inflexible allowing blood to leak into surrounding tissues. As this vicious cycle continues, the tissues lose much of their functionality.</p>
<p>The anthocyanins in ViaViente protect against this damage in several ways. First, they neutralize enzymes that destroy connective tissue. Second, their Anti-Oxidant capacity prevents oxidants from damaging connective tissue. Finally, they repair damaged proteins in the blood-vessel walls.<br />
Anthocyanins’ ability to check oxidative stress makes them powerful atherosclerosis fighters. They prevent oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), increase reverse cholesterol transport and decrease total and LDL cholesterol.</p>
<p>They also protect endothelial cells that line blood-vessel walls. When these cells are damaged atherosclerotic plaques form. Elderberry has been found to be helpful in minimizing endothelial cell damage and dilating coronary blood vessels to maintain healthy blood flow.</p>
<p>OPCs also block the progress of atherosclerosis. Their importance in our diets is becoming clear as we are learning how arteries become “hardened.” It is clear now that oxidized LDL is the source of inflammation, thickening of the arteries and clotting mechanisms, all of which lead to heart disease.</p>
<p>OPCs inhibit platelet aggregation four times better than aspirin in smokers. Further, OPCs can prevent damage caused by atherosclerosis and unhealthy lifestyles.</p>
<p>The OPCs in red wine may help explain the “French Paradox” or why low coronary heart disease rates exist in French provinces known for high-fat foods and red wine consumption. Red wine contains resveratrol and other polyphenols. OPCs prevent damage from blood clots, or ischemic reperfusion injury, as well as from venous insufficiency.</p>
<p>All told, the jury on the cardio protective benefits of ViaViente is in. I recommend you take a healthy dose each day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What are Antioxidants? Benefits of Antioxidants  Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our body cells use oxygen, they naturally produce free radicals (by-products) which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as &#8220;free radical scavengers&#8221; and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.  Health problems such as heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, cancer etc are all contributed by oxidative damage. Indeed, a recent study conducted by researchers from London found that 5 servings of fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of stroke by 25 percent. Antioxidants may also enhance immune defense and therefore lower the risk of cancer and infection.</p>
